Historians have an array of methods at their disposal with which to study and analyze history in a systematic way. This systematic study and analysis of history are referred to as historiography. According to studies by Attwood (1996, p 44), history can be studied from ideological perspectives such as Marxist historiography or even from religious ideologies which place a lot of emphasis on people’s freedom to act.

Sparta was a part of ancient Greece with a very rich history. It was a military society with one of the strongest armies in ancient Greece (Bakhuizen, 1994).
